Stichfrei Tropical is much more than just a mosquito repellent. The active ingredient Icaridin reliably protects against painful horsefly bites while keeping dangerous ticks away.

Tick risk areas are steadily increasing in both Germany and Austria. Every year, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports new regions where TBE cases occur.

Every tick bite can lead to TBE or Lyme disease.

TBE (tick-borne encephalitis) can lead to severe inflammation of the brain, while Lyme disease transmitted by tick bites can cause chronic joint and nerve damage if not detected in time.

Active ingredient and other ingredients of Ballistol Stichfrei Tropical

The main active ingredient in Tropical mosquito repellent spray is 20% Icaridin – one of the most modern repellents on the market. This active ingredient is boosted with 5% Citrepel®, providing extra protection against persistent mosquito species in the tropics.

Citrepel® is a highly effective repellent developed by Chemian Technology Ltd. Its main component, p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD), occurs naturally in small amounts in Java citronella grass and Eucalyptus citriodora. Special processing and concentration of these oils specifically increases the proportion of p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD) in the production of Citrepel®. The evaporating PMD scent repels insects before they can even land on the skin. This active ingredient shows comparable effectiveness to synthetic DEET.

The special combination of Icaridin and Citrepel® ensures reliable protection for up to 8 hours against mosquitoes, ticks and other annoying insects. Tropical mosquito species such as the Anopheles mosquito (malaria) or the Aedes mosquito (dengue, yellow fever) are kept away particularly effectively by this double active ingredient barrier.

The active ingredients are complemented by a carrier base that is ideal for all-day use in tropical conditions.

Unlike many other mosquito repellents, Ballistol Tropical mosquito repellent spray does not contain DEET as an active ingredient.

Difference between Icaridin and DEET in mosquito repellent sprays

When buying mosquito repellent sprays, you have to choose between the two main active ingredients, Icaridin and DEET. Both are highly effective, but the differences are crucial.

DEET was developed back in the 1940s and is considered the "classic" repellent. Although the active ingredient is effective because it disrupts the mosquito's nervous system, it has some disadvantages: it can attack plastics such as glasses frames or watch straps and cause irritation on sensitive skin. Its characteristic smell, which many find unpleasant, makes DEET even less popular.

Icaridin, on the other hand, is the modern successor to DEET. It blocks the mosquitoes' odour receptors. Developed in the 1990s, this active ingredient offers comparable protection, does not attack materials and has a neutral smell.

How to use mosquito repellent spray correctly so it works reliably

The best mosquito repellent is useless if it's applied incorrectly. Here's how to get optimum protection with Tropical mosquito repellent spray:

• Spray evenly onto all unprotected skin and rub in carefully. Don't forget often-overlooked areas such as ankles, neck and the backs of your hands!
• Areas under thin clothing also need protection. Mosquitoes bite easily through light summer clothing, so spray these fabrics too. The spray is suitable for both skin and clothing.
• Note for use on the face: first spray the product onto your palms and then spread it carefully over your face, avoiding the eye area and lips.
• For children, an adult should apply it and make sure nothing gets into the eyes or mouth.
• Important when combining with sunscreen: apply the sunscreen first and let it be absorbed. Only then apply the mosquito repellent.
• Reapply after swimming or heavy sweating. Even though the spray works for up to 8 hours, intense physical activity can shorten the duration.
