Sneaker Cleaning Kit

Clean, care and protect Sneakers

Dirt, stains, and the elements take a daily toll on sneakers. With the right sneaker cleaning kit and proper instructions, sneakers can be cleaned gently, cared for properly, and protected long term against moisture and new dirt without damaging the material.

Whether they are freshly bought favorites or well-worn classics, anyone who cares for their shoes regularly will preserve their value, appearance, and material quality for much longer.

What You Need for Sneaker Cleaning and Care

Not all sneakers are the same. From leather and mesh to synthetic leather and textiles, the range of materials is huge. Every material reacts differently to cleaning products.

Typical household remedies such as baking soda, vinegar, or dish soap are often too harsh. They can damage surfaces, discolor materials, or leave behind residue. In the worst case, the damage is irreversible. This should be taken into account when choosing a sneaker cleaner.

The products in our cleaning kits meet the specific requirements of modern sneakers. They are material-safe, gentle, and work reliably on all materials: leather, synthetic leather, textile, mesh, rubber, and plastic.

All-Purpose Cleaner 750 ml
Microfiber Cloth
Double-Sided Nylon Brush
All-Purpose Oil 50 ml liquid
Waterproofing Spray 200 ml

Set 1 for Sneaker Cleaning

You do not need a large number of products for the basic cleaning of sneakers and athletic shoes. Three coordinated products are enough to reliably remove even stubborn dirt.

Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner 750 ml: The high-quality, gentle surfactants work on almost all surfaces: textile, rubber, plastic, synthetic leather, and leather. After cleaning, treated surfaces become antistatic and dirt-repellent. Future cleaning effort is noticeably reduced. This makes it an ideal sneaker cleaner.

Ballistol Microfiber Cloth: The special weave structure boosts cleaning performance and leaves no scratches even on sensitive plastics. The cloth is made of 80% polyester and 20% polyamide and is washable at 60 °C. Size: 40 x 40 cm.

Double-Sided Nylon Brush: The slim handle brush, 175 mm long, fits securely in the hand and allows controlled use. Its double-sided design covers every cleaning task:

  • Wide side (3 rows of bristles, approx. 35 mm long): for large-area dirt
  • Narrow side (1 row of bristles, approx. 23 mm long): for seams, grooves, and hard-to-reach areas

Set 2 for Cleaning and Care

Anyone who wants not only to clean sneakers but also to care for them long term is fully equipped with this set. It contains all three products from the cleaning kit and adds a proven care product.

Ballistol All-Purpose Oil 50 ml – Care with Tradition: Ballistol has been used worldwide as a care oil for generations. Trust in the brand has grown because the results are simply convincing.

For smooth leather and synthetic leather, it is the ideal conditioner: it restores suppleness to the material, helps prevent cracks, and preserves the surface over the long term. Rubber and plastic applications are also cared for optimally.

Minor dirt on leather or plastic can be removed directly and easily with it, without needing the full cleaning kit right away – such as black scuff marks from buses or trains, which can quickly appear when brushing against a rubber edge.

Important: The all-purpose oil is not suitable for textiles or mesh materials.

The cleaning and care set is the right choice for anyone whose sneakers are mainly made of leather, synthetic leather, rubber, or plastic.

Set 3 for Cleaning, Care, and Protection

The most comprehensive of the three sets. It contains the sneaker cleaner, microfiber cloth, nylon brush, and all-purpose oil – plus a high-quality waterproofing spray for complete all-around protection.

Waterproofing Spray for All Sneaker Materials: The waterproofing spray reliably protects against moisture, dirt, and UV radiation. Water and dirt bead off before they can penetrate the material. It is suitable for all common sneaker materials:

  • Smooth leather and suede
  • Synthetic leather
  • Textiles and synthetic fibers
  • Mesh

It leaves no stains and does not affect the breathability of the material. After application, sneakers stay not only dry but also comfortable to wear.

Anyone who thoroughly cleans, conditions, and waterproofs sneakers or other athletic shoes once will enjoy them for a long time. This set provides everything needed from a single source.

What You Should Know Before Cleaning Sneakers

Many tips online sound temptingly simple. Household remedies as miracle solutions or simply putting sneakers in the washing machine – this kind of advice is too general and not suitable for every shoe. In the worst case, colors fade, adhesives come loose, or surfaces are permanently damaged.

Before you start cleaning, it is worth clarifying two common questions in advance.

Can You Wash Sneakers in the Washing Machine?

Sneakers are made from a wide range of materials – often combined in a single shoe. What works for one material in the wash can damage another.

Only shoes that are explicitly labeled as machine washable should go in the washing machine. Even then, only at a low temperature and ideally in a laundry bag to protect the surface.

Leather and synthetic leather shoes should never go in the washing machine. Targeted hand cleaning with the right products is the gentler and more reliable method for all materials.

The Difference Between Cleaning Colored and White Sneakers

Many people think white sneakers are especially high maintenance. In many cases, the opposite is true.

White sneakers are generally easier to clean because colorfastness does not need to be tested. Sneaker cleaner can be applied directly without the risk of attacking or discoloring the color.

Colored shoes require more caution. Before cleaning, always test in an inconspicuous spot to make sure the cleaner is compatible with the color. Intense or dark shades react more sensitively to cleaning products than white sneakers.

The Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner removes dirt especially gently and, thanks to its mild surfactants, is generally also suitable for colored sneakers.

Cleaning Sneakers with Household Remedies

Household remedies such as baking soda or bleach may seem like a cheap and simple solution at first glance. In practice, however, they often cause more harm than good.

Baking Soda: Works as an abrasive. On delicate surfaces such as smooth leather or special plastics, it can roughen the surface and cause permanent damage. It is also much less effective on deeply embedded dirt in mesh or textiles than specially developed sneaker cleaners. On dark sneakers in particular, whitish residue may remain after drying and must then be removed with extra effort.

Bleach: Many people hope bleach will make white sneakers bright white again. The opposite can happen. Bleach can turn white sneakers yellow and at the same time attacks many materials. The risk of irreparable damage is high.

How to Clean Sneakers Properly

With the right sneaker cleaning kit and the proper technique, all materials can be cleaned gently and thoroughly.

The following sections show step by step how to do it:

  1. Clean the Laces

Before cleaning the sneaker, remove the laces. This allows both to be cleaned thoroughly and separately.

In most cases, water in the sink is enough. For more stubborn stains, use the Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner. Alternatively, most sneaker laces can be washed in the washing machine inside a laundry bag.

Leather Laces: Spray on the all-purpose cleaner and pull the laces through a damp microfiber cloth. Then let them air dry. After drying, apply a little Ballistol All-Purpose Oil to a soft cloth and rub it in – this keeps the leather supple.

  2. Basic Cleaning with a Brush

Before using the sneaker cleaner, coarse dirt should be removed mechanically. Smaller heavy encrustations can be removed very well with the double-sided nylon brush included in the set. For very heavy soiling, a scrub brush is recommended.

The wide side handles larger areas such as the upper or the sole. The narrow side reaches seams and grooves. Brush dry first, then clean damp – this prevents dirt particles from being rubbed into the material.

  3. Cleaning Leather and Synthetic Leather Sneakers

Smooth leather and synthetic leather are among the most common sneaker materials. Both can be cleaned reliably and gently with Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner.

Spray the cleaner directly onto the surface and let it sit briefly. Then wipe it off with the microfiber cloth. The cloth’s special weave supports the cleaning process and lifts away loosened dirt. For even better cleaning performance, it is recommended to slightly dampen the green microfiber cloth, as in a damp state it binds and absorbs dirt particles even more effectively.

Caution with Suede: Suede is more delicate than smooth leather and does not tolerate most standard cleaners well. Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner, however, can even support suede cleaning.

Here the rule is: first carry out a careful dry clean with the nylon brush. Do not use a cloth. Stubborn areas can then be treated carefully with a small amount of all-purpose cleaner. To do this, spray only a little cleaner onto a soft brush and gently work it into the suede without pressure. Then lightly dampen a brush with water and gently brush over the surface in one direction. Only slightly moisten the material rather than soaking it. Then let it air dry.

  4. Cleaning Fabric and Mesh Sneakers

Mesh is especially delicate. A brush should not be used here. Instead, the special weave of the Ballistol microfiber cloth comes into its own.

Spray the Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner generously onto the fabric or mesh and let it work well. In the meantime, dampen the microfiber cloth with water and wring it out thoroughly so it is damp but not dripping. Then spray the area again and work it with the damp microfiber cloth using circular motions.

  5. Cleaning Sneaker Soles

First brush off coarse dirt dry with the nylon brush. The narrow side of the brush also reaches grooves and tread recesses reliably.

Then spray the Ballistol All-Purpose Cleaner onto the sole and let it sit briefly. The cleaner loosens stubborn dirt and discoloration without attacking the rubber. Then wipe it off with a cloth – done.

Drying Sneakers

Neither a hair dryer, radiator, nor direct sunlight is suitable. Heat dries out leather and synthetic leather and can cause cracking. Excessive heat from blow-drying can also loosen adhesives.

After cleaning, first blot the sneakers with a clean cloth to absorb excess moisture. Then let them air dry. Patience pays off here. A gently dried sneaker keeps its shape and material much longer.

Caring for and Protecting Sneakers

Cleaning alone is not enough. Anyone who wants to keep sneakers in good condition over the long term should care for and protect them regularly.

Anyone who uses a protective spray regularly benefits twice: protected sneakers get dirty much more slowly, and the next cleaning is quicker and easier.

Protective Spray for Sneakers – Ballistol Waterproofing Spray

For new sneakers and after every thorough cleaning, using a waterproofing spray is recommended. Ballistol Waterproofing Spray is suitable for all sneaker materials and provides multiple types of protection.

It protects against moisture and at the same time acts as a protective spray against dirt. Dust, mud, and other particles cannot penetrate the material. In puddles, dirty water simply beads off. It also protects leather and textiles against UV rays, helping colors stay vibrant longer.

Ballistol All-Purpose Oil – the Insider Tip for Sneaker Care

Ballistol All-Purpose Oil is a real insider tip for regular sneaker care. It protects smooth leather, synthetic leather, plastic, and rubber from drying out and keeps surfaces supple, helping to prevent cracks from forming. The rubber sole on the sides also benefits from regular treatment with the care oil.

Apply a little oil to a soft cloth and rub it in evenly – done.

Set for Cleaning, Care, and Protection

Well-cared-for shoes do not just look better, they also last longer.

Anyone who invests in their sneakers should also invest in their care. The cleaning kits provide everything needed for that. Ballistol delivers convincing results quickly and easily.
