Travel first aid kit
There is a great deal of information, lists and tips – some of it contradictory – about what belongs in a travel first aid kit, most of which confuses more than it helps. Depending on the aims of those compiling such information, lists of "travel emergency medicines" vary in length and cost. Incidentally, travel first aid kits aren't only important on holiday. In fact, most trips are not holidays but business trips or trips for a particular purpose, on which travel first aid kits are often forgotten. On holidays, travel first aid kits are at least planned and put together best. Our tips, however, apply to all kinds of travel.
Unlike home first aid kits, there are no official recommendations for the contents of travel first aid kits. That's why we have also done a lot of research for the travel first aid kit and put together the best basic travel first aid kit as a complete set in terms of budget and usefulness. After all, among the bewildering number of ready-made travel first aid kits on offer, there are many ways to waste money. In principle, the same arguments apply as when putting together a sensible home first aid kit. One key difference, however, is the necessary tailoring to the destination or type of trip.
But once again, our formula for the most affordable and at the same time best-suited travel first aid kit applies:
+ standard medicines in the customer's preferred products (headache tablets etc.)
= ideal universal travel first aid kit
+ special products for the destination and type of trip
= ideal travel first aid kit for destination and type of trip
+ individual additions due to illnesses or personal circumstances
= individually ideal travel first aid kit
This approach saves money and gives you the travel first aid kit best suited to your needs. The kit then contains nothing unnecessary, yet everything is covered.
Our basic travel first aid kit contains everything you absolutely need and can then be adapted perfectly to your trip at the lowest possible cost with individual additions. For example, you can use the additions from our travel first aid kit to create the following special travel first aid kits:
Travel first aid kit for specific regions such as
- the tropics
- the north
- the Mediterranean
- Asia
- all other regions of the world
Travel first aid kit by type of trip, such as
- cycling tours
- mountain holidays
- active and sports holidays
- hiking holidays
- holidays with children
- beach and resort holidays
- cruises
- holidays in the tropics
- adventure holidays
- hunting trips
- all other types of holiday
How do I put together my travel first aid kit as quickly and easily as possible?
To answer this question, we divide the items into the following categories:
- What must be in the travel first aid kit
- What should be in the travel first aid kit
- Other items for the travel first aid kit as appropriate – you decide
What must be in the travel first aid kit?
All items marked in green are already included in our basic travel first aid kit.
- Medicines taken regularly (prescribed by your doctor)
- Your preferred painkillers
- Contents overview with expiry dates
We have prepared an overview for you in which you can enter the medicines, their purpose and their expiry dates. This way you can always see at a glance whether something needs replacing. - Overview of the most important emergency numbers at your destination
We have prepared an overview for you in which you can enter your most important personal emergency numbers. So that you don't forget anything, the most important details are already filled in and you only need to add the phone numbers. - Dressing material according to DIN 13164
with adhesive plasters, quick-release dressings, fingertip and finger dressings, plaster strips, dressing packs, dressing cloths, wound compresses, rescue blanket, fixation bandages, triangular bandages, dressing scissors, disposable gloves, skin cleansing wipes, first aid booklet and contents list – all in the full quantities specified in DIN 13164. Here you will find the complete list of contents according to DIN 13164. - Clinical thermometer
A digital clinical thermometer for accurate measurement of body temperature. Glass thermometers are unsuitable for travelling because they can break. - Tweezers for removing splinters and other small foreign bodies from the skin.
High-quality Feilchenfeld splinter tweezers for removing all small foreign bodies from wounds. - Tick tweezers
High-quality metal tick tweezers that allow correct tick removal. Here you can find out how to remove ticks correctly. - Wound care product (100 ml Neo Ballistol + 10 Neo Ballistol wipes for on the go)
Neo Ballistol cleans, promotes wound healing, relieves itching, e.g. from insect bites, and is suitable for many other uses. - Insect bite protection (100 ml Stichfrei insect repellent + 10 Stichfrei wipes for on the go)
Stichfrei insect repellent reliably protects for many hours against annoying and dangerous insects such as mosquitoes, horseflies, ticks etc. - 2 cool packs / cold compresses
Our cool packs are hot/cold compresses and are microwave-safe. It is best to always keep the compresses in the fridge – only then are they useful in an emergency. If you need heat, you can quickly and easily warm the compresses in the microwave. We supply two hot/cold compresses with the travel first aid kit in the following sizes: 12 x 29 cm and 13 x 14 cm. - Lockable, sturdy and easy-to-grab "container" for the contents of the travel first aid kit
We advise against locking travel first aid kits. You can read why we recommend this under home first aid kit - First aid instructions
Most people once completed a first aid course or instruction in emergency measures at the scene of an accident as part of their driving test, and don't know how to act correctly in an emergency. This short guide shows clearly and simply what matters in first aid and how to act correctly.
Use insect repellents safely. Before use always read the label and product information.
What else should be in the travel first aid kit?
From these products you can now put together your own shopping list for the pharmacy as needed.
- Ointment or gel for treating sprains and bruises
- Remedies for coughs, colds, hoarseness and sore throats
- Fever reducers
- Remedies for upset stomach, constipation and flatulence
- Remedies for fungal infections of the skin and mucous membranes
- Electrolytes to compensate for fluid loss (in case of vomiting or diarrhoea).
Our tip:
Make your own electrolyte solution
If you have 4 tablespoons of glucose, a teaspoon of salt, half a litre of still mineral water and half a litre of fruit juice or tea at home, you don't need these ready-made mixtures. The recipe listed here has the same effect.

Medicines when travelling with acute or chronic illnesses
If you rely on prescription medicines during your trip because of an illness, there may be several things to consider:
Your chosen means of transport
If you are travelling by plane, for example, be sure to observe the applicable rules on carrying liquids and so-called dangerous items, which also include syringes for diabetics and other necessary aids. Your airline can help answer individual questions before the flight. At the airport itself it is usually too late.
Your destination
If you are travelling, for example, to politically unstable countries with unclear rules on importing medicines or aids such as syringes, you may not be able to take the necessary medicines and aids with you. Sometimes a doctor's certificate (ideally in English) is enough, sometimes it has to be certified, and in some cases a diabetic ID card is sufficient. Ask your tour operator or the embassy of your destination country whether you need any accompanying documents for your medicines and medical aids to enter the country, and if so which ones.
Climate and weather
Some medicines are sensitive to certain temperatures or to changes in temperature. This can make them ineffective, change their effect and toxicity, or increase sensitivity to light, leading to sunburn. It is therefore strongly advisable to read the package leaflet carefully and to discuss the transport and storage conditions of the medicines during the trip with your pharmacist or doctor. Examples of unsuitable storage conditions include car glove compartments in high summer temperatures or cold aircraft cargo holds. But it's not only storing the medicines that can be a problem. Many medicines, for example, don't go well with subsequently spending time in strong sunlight. The risks of such "side effects" that you hadn't thought of beforehand can also be discussed with your pharmacist in advance.
Getting new medicines at your destination or on the way
Destinations rarely have such comprehensive healthcare as Germany. And medicines with the same name don't always contain the same thing. The scope of your travel first aid kit therefore depends very much on the medical care available at your destination. If you are planning a holiday on the Baltic coast in Schleswig-Holstein or in the Bavarian Alps, you can plan differently than for a tour of rural India. So in most cases the rule is: stock up on sufficient medicines before you travel. They should last until the end of the trip. In case your medicines get lost with your luggage, for example, you should also carry a prescription from your doctor for the necessary quantity. Wherever possible, always keep the most important medicines and aids in your hand luggage. It can also be helpful to research before you leave where you can find help at your destination in an emergency. Addresses of hospitals, pharmacies, emergency centres, German-speaking doctors, embassies or consulates etc. can be important in this context.
Do you already know our basic home first aid kit?
Following the same principles as the travel first aid kit, we have also put together an affordable home first aid kit for you, which above all takes the following into account: all necessary items are included, and you put together any items for which you may prefer certain products (e.g. headache tablets etc.) yourself.
Do you already know the On-Board-Pharmacy for skippers?
Following the same principles as the home- and travel pharmacy kit, we also have compiled a favourable on board pharmacy kit for you that take particular into account the following:
All necessary contents are available.
All content, where you may prefer specific compounds (e.g. headache tablets, etc.), you compile self.
